Linton Kwesi Johnson portrait

I had a bit of time at the Tricycle theatre to take this portrait before documenting an event with Linton Kwesi Johnson and Patience Agbabi who were sharing the poetry, prose and song that has inspired them throughout their lives.

It is a tricky number when you are a fan of your subjects work – especially when he starts the shoot saying “I hate photographers – we never get on”. To be honest that statement was a disappointment from a man so clearly aware of the dangers of generalisation within society, however, a degree of tension is not always bad between photographer and subject as I strived to rise to his level of confrontation and  engagement.

It was a night put on by English PEN. Below is an images from the performance.
